What can I grow in the spring? Springtime in Austin is great for growing lettuce, spinach, carrots, beets, kale, collards, broccoli, cabbage, kohlrabi, radishes, turnips, and more! You can also grow fresh herbs like dill, fennel, cilantro, chamomile, and parsley.
How far apart should I space plants? Larger plants like broccoli or cabbage require 12-18,” smaller plants like spinach or radishes can be 2″ – 4” apart. Check your seed packet for the best spacing. Plant a little more than you think you will need to make sure you have enough plants.
How often should I water? It depends on your soil type and the recent weather. Dig your hand down two or three inches beneath the soil surface and press the soil between your fingers. Does it feel moist or can you form a ball with it? If so, your soil has plenty of water for your plants. Does it feel dry and fall apart between your fingers? This means you need to water.
